Middle-Earth seems like it’s a pretty happening place: plenty of exotic locales to explore, elves handing out gifts, trees to ride when your footses ache, and treasure available only to those courageous enough to take it. If it ever existed in a Tolkien novel or note, then Jian has probably drawn it: his jaw-droppingly resplendent masterpieces tell just as enthralling a story as the novels they emulate… though in considerably fewer words. This is for anyone who lives in Atlanta, who has ever lived in Atlanta, has visited Atlanta, ever plans to visit Atlanta, knows anyone who lives in Atlanta, knows anyone who has ever visited Atlanta or anyone who has ever heard of Atlanta, Georgia.

Atlanta is composed mostly of one-way streets. The only way to get out of downtown Atlanta is to turn around and start over when you reach Greenville, South Carolina.

All directions start with, “Go down Peachtree” and include the phrase, “When you see the Waffle House….” Except that in Cobb County, all directions begin with, “Go to the Big Chicken.”

Peachtree Street has no beginning and no end and is not to be confused with Peachtree Circle, Peachtree Place, Peachtree Lane, Peachtree Road, Peachtree Parkway, Peachtree Run, Peachtree Trace, Peachtree Ave, Peachtree Commons, Peachtree Battle, Peachtree Corners, New Peachtree, Old Peachtree, West Peachtree, Peachtree-Dunwoody, or Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

If you are standing on a corner and a MARTA bus stops, you’re expected to get on and go somewhere.

Construction on Peachtree Street is a way of life and a permanent form of entertainment, especially when a water line is tapped and Atlanta’s version of Old Faithful erupts.

Construction crews are not doing their jobs properly unless they close down all major streets during rush hour.

Atlantans are very proud of our racetrack, known as Road Atlanta. It winds throughout the city on the Interstates, hence it’s name.

Actually, I-285, the loop that encircles Atlanta and has a posted speed limit of 55mph (but you have to maintain 80 mph just to keep from getting run over), is known to truckers as “The Watermelon 500.”

Georgia 400 is our equivalent of the Autobahn. You will rarely see a semi-truck on GA 400, because even the truck drivers are intimidated by the oversized SUV-wielding housewives racing home after a grueling day at the salon or the tennis match to meet their children at the school bus coming home from the college prep preschool.

The last thing you want to do is give another driver the finger, unless your car is armored, your trigger finger is itchy, and your AK-47 has a full clip.

The pollen count is off the national scale for unhealthy, which starts at 120. Atlanta is usually in the 2,000 to 4,000 range. All roads, vehicles, houses, etc. are yellow from March 28th to July 15th. If you have any allergies you will die.

But other than that, it’s a great place to live!

Okay, here’s the thing about Star Trek: TOS.

It aired in the late 60s, when TVs were still shit. Not everyone even had colour television. Those that did not still get great detail and it was distorted — remember big CRT monitors with the rounded edges? That’s what TVs were like. Only they were often not as large as what we would consider a small computer monitor these days, much less anything approaching the size of most TVs these days.

If you watch other television from the same era, you’ll see a lot of it had all the same: garish makeup, weird colour issues, over the top wardrobe, and extreme overacting.

Putting aside the colour issues, which were purely down to evolving technology — the rest of it? We have that kind of stuff to this day. It’s called theatre.

Theatrical acting seen up close looks pretty much equally absurd. Filmed theatre tends to read for shit, for this reason. Theatre accounts for the physical distance between the audience and the actors by caking on the makeup so thickly it looks ludicrous up close, so that it can be seen at all from a distance; by physically overacting so that the audience see what’s done at all.

Well, the physical distance between the audience and the screen wasn’t much, but the distortion of the imagery was probably worse in television.

Everyone rags on Shatner, but you know what? If you watch, Nimoy overacts Spock nearly as equally — Spock, cool emotionless Spock, overacted, yes — the physical acting of that cool rationality is far exaggerated over what it would be in the modern day. That eyebrow of his has to move so far because otherwise you wouldn’t have seen it at all. And, for that matter, de Kelley overacts Bones, etc., etc.

I mean, yeah, Shatner chewed the scenery to pieces, totally true.

But he wasn’t alone, and it wasn’t without reason.

(No, seriously, if you don’t believe me, go watch some TOS and then go watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Or Wrath of Khan if you don’t feel like space porn and going to sleep for lack of plot, whatever. The point is, Shatner (and the others) toned it way the fuck down for film. Because they and/or the directors knew the medium they were working with.)

Yeah, this, absolutely. The acting in TV shows from the 1960s is much more like stage acting — big gestures, big reactions, not the more subtle, naturalistic TV acting we’re used to now. The scenery and props on TOS were also often crap, if you expect them to actually look realistic. While part of that was budget, the show was also aimed at an audience that accepted TV scenery as more like stage scenery — meant to suggest a setting rather than be a perfect photographic depiction of it. And that was watching it on TVs that would have washed out beautiful fine detail anyway.

Thinking about TOS as if it were a stage version of Star Trek probably is the best way to understand why it was the way it was (and why it was popular despite William Shatner chewing scenery left and right).

Amanda: Good question. Well firstly, John isn't dead. We wouldn't have killed him off. We were coming up with ideas on how we would bring him back etc. He is too much of a fabulous character to kill off. We did that with Ashley AND LOOK HOW THAT BACKFIRED. It's so hard with Helen and John because they are so clearly still in love with each other and it's a really passionate relationship. They have this child and that brings them closer. THEY GOT ENGAGED FOR GODS SAKE. and then she got with Watson. She is a bit of a whore. A bit of a PLAYAAA. We were definitely going to look into their relationship in season 5 and I think something would have happened again and we were talking about getting them back together. Especially after 'Haunted' when we got a glimpse of him and we figured out why he was the way he was. But yes. They aren't over.

The above = balm for my ridiculous shipper heart. I love them, despite their SPECTACULAR PROBLEMS. (Not that I don't love Helen and Nikola too. I will take the Five in all possible combinations, kthnx.)
